How to Make a Vision Board that Works in 10 Simple Steps
What exactly is a vision board?
As a coach. I always advocate using a vision board for my clients who are looking for ways to bring their desired outcomes into their lives, and I give them clear instructions as to how to make a vision board that works for them in a few simple steps.
A Vision board is a collage of images, photographs, affirmations and cutouts of any dreams or desires that you have and would love to bring into your life.
Whether you have a physical vision board or an app, the principles are the same, you gather together in one place all of the visual representations of what you would like and arrange them together so that you can look at them every day and visualise having them in your life.
How do you make a simple vision board?
Vision boards aren’t a new idea, you may remember when you were younger sitting and cutting out images from magazines of stuff that you would like and sticking them into a scrapbook. Or glueing in photographs of friends, places you had been to or important things in your life that were dear to you.
If you were to look back now, I bet there would be many of those things that you pasted into a scrapbook, that came true. This is the power of visualisation and vision boards and the great thing is that they are super easy to make and great fun too.
You can either download an App onto your phone, laptop or notebook or get a notice board or scrapbook and stick images on manually.
You can get inspiration from magazines, Instagram, Pinterest or books, and can either cut out the images that you want to use or just download them.
The one thing that you have to make sure of is that they are things that you want and desire. They can be anything that you can think of and wish to bring into your life;
Dream home
Career
Ideal partner
Holidays
Pets
Cars
Clothes
Dream kitchens
Life experiences
Gardens
Phones
Personal growth
Health
Finances
Hobbies and interests
The list is endless, everything that is in your mind that you would love to have in your life can be placed on a vision board….it’s that simple.

How to make a vision board for manifestation
Many people use vision boards for manifestation. Manifestation is learning to transform your life around by believing that the things that you want to bring into it will be brought to you by the Law of Attraction.
This is a self-help technique that involves positive thinking to bring what you are wishing for into your life.
Using a visualisation board for manifestation requires you to place onto your board anything that you desire and then positive thinking in the present tense that you are in possession of it right now.
The repetition of the thoughts that you have and the positivity and belief behind them are what manifests your desires to you.
10 Simple Steps
If you want to make a vision board, follow the 10 simple steps below to start your journey of visualisation.
1. Define your goals in life
The first thing that you have to do is to decide what you would like on your vision board. Look at the goals that you have in your life.
Is your board going to be centred around material possessions that you would love in your life?
Is your board focused more on your relationships or career goals or is it a bit of everything and encompasses all areas of your life?
Define the goals that you have and this will make everything much more coherent and centred.
2. Collect images, quotes etc
After you have decided what you want to place on your vision board, the next step is gathering all of the images, quotes, positive affirmations and swatches that you are going to use to build up your board. This is the really interesting part, as you will get to be as creative as you want in the material that you collect.
At this stage of the vision board building, collect as much material as you possibly can. It doesn’t matter if you don’t end up using it, just collect anything and everything that resonates with your goals at this stage. This stage can really open up to you all of the possibilities of your vision board and all the directions that you can take it in.
3. Filter down to your favourite items
Once you have collected as much material together as possible, you can now start filtering it down to your favourite items.
This is the stage where you can really begin to hone in on how you want your finished board to look.
Keep any unused material as you never know, this may be something that you want to add later on down the line or when you have brought items into your life.
4. Insert yourself into your items where possible
To make your vision board as effective as possible, you have to really be able to see yourself with your desired objects.
One way to make this easier for your brain is to insert YOU into your board wherever possible.
This could be a photograph of you standing alongside your dream car, even if it is still in a car showroom, or a photograph of you wearing an outfit that you want, even if you are wearing it in the shop changing room.
The point is, your brain will take on board more easily an image that it believes so seeing you with your desired outcome, is one way of making your brain do this.
5. Separate your ideas into usable sections
Try to separate all of the ideas, goals and images that you want to use for your vision board into usable sections.
This will be more aesthetically pleasing and easier for your brain to work with, rather than just a jumble of images all thrown together.
You could have a place on your board for holidays, one for home interiors, or one for relationships. This will make it easier for you to visualise one particular area at a time as well.
6. Make it current
You can keep adding and updating your vision board as you go along. You may want to have seasonal boards, yearly boards or ones for a special occasion. Making it current means that you can evaluate your board as you are going along, you can see how you are doing about your goals and you can tweak it as you go along.
7. Get excited by it
You will need to be excited and charged by your vision board for it to be successful.
If you have no real excitement towards it then the chances are that once you have developed it you will put it out of your mind and not look at it again.
A positive attitude towards what is on your vision board will mean that it is more in alignment with your values, beliefs and dreams.
This is a process where you will need to be positive, excited and full of belief for it to be successful.
8. Begin filling in your vision board
This is the creative part of your vision board. Place the images that you have in a way that makes sense to you so that they are easy to see and study.
Try not to have too many overlapping images as some could get lost in the overall effect. This should be part of the process that you really enjoy doing.
You want to make your board as appealing to you as possible so that you will spend time looking at it. Make it as eye-catching as possible and make sure that it fills you with joy, motivation and inspiration when you look at it.
Don’t have any images on there that are incongruent with you, every image should fit into the values and beliefs that you have in your life and should be one that is going to enhance your life and fill it with happiness.
9. Make a final review and assessment
Once you have filled out your board review it to make sure that it looks how you want it to look and that the theme and design are good then assess it and make sure that it evokes the required emotions in you to sit visualising.
If it doesn’t feel right to you then you won’t use it so make sure when you assess the final board it makes you feel exactly how you want to feel.
10. Observe your board as frequently as possible
The final simple step is to place your board somewhere so that you will be able to observe it frequently.
Ideally, it should be in a room that you use a lot or somewhere that you can sit, relax and study it.
Make sure that it is in a place that you will spend time in, a warm, comfortable room where you have access to a comfortable chair to sit for a good ten minutes at a time.
Ideally, try and get into a good routine for studying your board.
The best times are first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening when you are relaxed and can devote some time to it.
You need to make sure that you are in a good frame of mind, happy, relaxed and ready to spend some time visualising all that you want for your future.
The more time that you can devote to your board the more effective it will be so do try and make it a priority in your day.
